Ramadan Kareem 2022 - Tips For Healthy Fasting
Welcome to the holy month of fasting called Ramadan! We fast and pay our respects to the lord. Fasting is done to bring prosperity and happiness and enlighten the spiritual self. It is important in many religious traditions. Although it is recommended to keep track of your health along with the fasts.
However, if you have health issues, like pregnancy, breastfeeding, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses it’s better to consult your doctor before fasting. All the medications and other supplements should also be considered. Most medicines cannot be taken without fluid or food intake. Make sure to check in with your health expert before fasting. Health is first, right?
For a successful Ramadan fasting, we have compiled a list of a few things. After all, it isn’t just restricted to physical but also mental activities and strains. We have to prepare our mind and body to work in synchronization.
Tips For Healthy Fasting
1. Stay Hydrated
If you have a hydrated body, you’ll stay active for long. Try to drink as many cups of water as possible at night. Even though you aren’t thirsty, drink anyway (don’t get water-stroked!). Aim for 5-7 glasses of water. Don’t consume coffee or tea before the fast. Caffeinated drinks can make your body dehydrated.
Traditionally, it is recommended to open the fast with water. No matter how many tasty dishes you have on Iftar, always drink first. Hydration will refresh your body. Don’t drink too much at once, it can dilute your body’s electrolytes and cause water intoxication (the stomach war with water)!
2. Food Varieties
After the stressful fasting, your body needs an ample amount of food. Opt for different food items like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, healthy fat, and lean proteins. Give your body the right nourishments with the right foods.
3. Portion your Food
Iftar is feast time. We all get excited and go on an over-eating trip. The human body takes about 20 minutes to register food. Start with small portions and don’t over-eat. Eat slowly and let your body digest food properly. You don’t want to load food and later get ill at night!
4. Keep active
We all feel exhausted during fasting. Though, you should opt for a few light walks or light intensity workouts. Try to make those muscles work during the morning. Don’t stress much and dehydrate the body. You can perform yoga too.
Pre-Sunrise Meal Preparation
A successful sehri or the pre-sunrise meal is balanced. If you have high or low blood sugar levels, you should keep the sehri as balanced as possible. People try to indulge in fried food and sweet dishes. But one should be mindful before preparing a plate full of unhealthy food!
1. Whole Grains: Brown rice, oatmeal, cereals, and bread are all good to go. Eat whole grains to make the stomach feel full and satisfied for a long time.
2. Fruits and vegetables: bananas, apples, berries, oranges, watermelon, cucumber, lettuce, celery, tomatoes, etc are all good sources of fiber. These will help your stomach to stay full.
3. Protein intake: Milk, yogurt, eggs, lean chicken, and nuts are all good sources of protein. You can also have cottage cheese or tofu.
4. Healthy Fats: olives and nuts should be taken too. These help to grease the digestive tract and keep digestion proper.
If you have an elderly person at home or someone who needs special care, make sure to keep their Sehri meal as healthy as possible.
Take special care about the ingredients and other allergens in foods. Health is the most important thing during Ramadan. Apart from the food, manage your mental health. Keep stress on track and see what works the best for you.
